NEWS: 10 Modern Refineries Getting Ready, Says VP

Vice President of Nigeria, Yemi Osinbajo

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has confirmed that 10 modular refineries were at advanced stages of development in the Niger Delta.

According to his Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Mr Laolu Akande, the 10 modular refineries were located in five out of the nine states in the Niger Delta region.

They are located in Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Delta, Edo and Imo states.
Osinbajo said that two of the refineries, Amakpe Refinery (Akwa Ibom), and OPAC Refinery (Delta State), have their mini-refineries modules already fabricated, assembled and containerized overseas, ready for shipment to Nigeria for installation.
The total proposed refining capacities of the 10 licensed refineries stands at 300,000 barrels.
“Advanced stage of development for the modular refineries means that the projects have passed the Licence to Establish (LTE) stage, while some have the Authority to Construct (ATC) licence or close to having it because they have met some critical requirements in the Licensed stage.
“There are three stages in the process of refinery establishment; Licence to Establish (LTE), Authority to Construct (ATC) and Licence to Operate (LTO).’’
The Vice President believes the modular refinery initiative which featured prominently in recent talks between the Federal Government and the oil-producing areas, as represented by PANDEF, will also reposition the petroleum industry.
They would ensure self-sufficiency of petroleum products while serving as a disincentive for illegal refineries and oil pollution.
According to him, the Buhari’s administration is committed to promoting the establishment of privately financed modular refineries so as to increase local refining capacity, create jobs, ensure peace and stability in the Niger Delta.
He explained that end-of-the-year review meeting of the Niger Delta Inter-Ministerial Committee was hold at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
Osinbajo noted that the Federal Government, in line with its Niger Delta New Vision, was targeting measurable objectives in its efforts towards implementing development projects in the region.
He added that the December 22 meeting received a report that 38 licensed privately financed greenfield and mini-modular refineries investors have so far indicated interests in the establishment of refineries in the region.
At least ten of the licensed refineries investors are at an advanced stage of development.
He noted that the issue of funding was a major challenge to most of the investors, and the primary reason holding further progress of the refinery projects.
The Vice President directed the Federal Ministry of Petroleum Resources to keep providing the necessary support and creating the enabling environment for positive investments in modular refineries by engaging key government agencies.
The agencies include the Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC, Nigerian Content Development & Monitoring Board, NCDMB, and financial institutions, including the International Finance Corporation, African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank), Nigerian Sovereign Investment Authority, Bank of Industry, amongst others.

News: UN Issues Red Alert To The World

UN Secretary General, Antonio Guterres

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has issued “a red alert’’ to the world” ahead of the year 2018.

Guterres said: “On New Year’s Day 2018, I am not issuing an appeal. I am issuing an alert – a red alert for our world.’’

The UN chief, in a new year message, expressed regret that in 2017, the world went in reverse to the appeal for peace. He said that when he assumed office one year ago, he had appealed for 2017 to be a year for peace.
“Conflicts have deepened and new dangers have emerged. Global anxieties about nuclear weapons are the highest since the Cold War. Climate change is moving faster than we are. Inequalities are growing".
“We see horrific violations of human rights. Nationalism and xenophobia are on the rise”.
As the world begins 2018, the UN chief called for global unity. Guterres added that he truly believed we could make our world more safe and secure.
“We can settle conflicts, overcome hatred and defend shared values. But we can only do that together,” he said.
The UN chief urged leaders everywhere to make this New Year’s resolution: “Narrow the gaps. Bridge the divides. Rebuild trust by bringing people together around common goals.”
Guterres, who assumed office on Jan. 1, 2017, stressed that in 2018, “unity is the path” adding, “our future depends on it”.
“I wish you peace and health in 2018. Thank you. Shokran. Xie Xie. Merci. Spasiba. Gracias. Obrigado,” the ninth UN chief concluded.

“Even though fuel is scarce, fun is not scarce here; parents, children and even ground parents are all here catching their fun.
“You know transport fare has gone very high, so instead of spending so much on transport to go home for Christmas, it is better to come and enjoy in the park and be happy.

“We thank God for being alive to celebrate Christmas and we pray he keeps us alive to celebrate the next one. Nigeria will get better with time,” Emeka said.
Mr Paul Okoh, appreciates fun seekers whom he described as “wonderful people”.

“If you pray and leave the rest to God, He will surprise you. Nigeria is blessed. However, we need to pray for our leaders and also contribute our individual quota to nation building.
“Let us also pray to God to soften the heart of our leaders that are heartless, who do not see the sufferings of the people.
“I want to thank the media and the security agencies that are helping in enlightening and protecting the people,” Garba said.
The situation was not different at the Millennium Park, located near Transcorp Hilton in Maitama where fun seekers in their hundreds troupe in have fun.
NAN observed that due to the large crowd, fun seekers have to queue to enter the park with security personnel’s conducting searching at the gate.
Also, the parking lot of the park was filled. Fun seekers later used the unity fountain area to park their cars.

“My brother, today is Christmas, we need to thank God of the life and also enjoy the life in the park.
“As you can see, we are ready to catch our fun. Even though fuel is scarce, it did not show in the park because you can see people in their hundreds coming to have fun here.
“However, we must not also forget the reason for the season. It is all about love, but you need to love yourself to know how to love others.
“We are here. Let the fun begin. Thank you my brother,” Timothy said.
Malam Bala Abubakar, a horse-ride service provider, said he provided a horse ride for two hundred naira and to mount the horse and take photographs, he charged one hundred naira.

News: NNPC, DPR uncover illegal fuel reservoirs

Meanwhile, a combined team of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR) and security agents uncovered illegal reservoirs of fuel in Abuja.

Speaking at the site of the mini depot, the Group Managing Director of the NNPC, Dr Maikanti Baru, said it was saddening to make such discoveries in the city center when less than 500 meters away, motorists were on endless queues.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that hundreds of jerry cans, 200-liter drums, and 500 liter tanks were uncovered in a sting operation by the team in the city center.
According to him, the perpetrators have caused untold pain and hardship on Nigerians during a crucial season as Christmas.
“In the war room (where crucial issues are discussed during fuel crises), we asked ourselves why the situation (fuel queues) persists.
“We got an intelligence report of these mini depots and as you can see, these golf cars that are supposed to have 40 litres have tanks that can take 200 liters of petrol.
“This other one is a mini depot. Although some of the products are diesel, the DPR says it is unauthorised. We have over 50 days supply of diesel and so there is no reason to hoard the product.’’
The Abuja Zonal Controller of DPR, Mr Mohammed Abba, told newsmen “we have arrested 20 people in connection with those who sell in jerry cans in Zone One alone and their facilities.
“We are handing them over to the Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps, because the DPR has no capabilities to prosecute.
“We will test for forensic analysis and we will pursue the case to court’’.
Mr Aminu Abdullahi, Assistant Commandant-General Operations, Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps while receiving the perpetrators confirmed receiving the 20 persons.
“We have received the suspects and DPR will be called in for forensic analysis to test what was handed over,’’ he said.
A survey of filling stations by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in the FCT revealed that motorists are lamenting the harsh conditions on fuel queues on Christmas Day.
Some of the filling stations visited by NAN were the NIPCO along Jabi, Oando in Zone 1, Texaco on the Airport Road and NNPC Mega Station along Zone 1 and on the Kubwa Expressway.
NAN reports that though there was presence of security agents in almost all stations visited, the queues were rowdy with angry commuters screaming themselves down.
NAN also reports that at the NNPC mega station, the rowdiness was caused by two cars on an illegal queue that blocked the main queue and insisted on entry.
The presence of three security agencies comprising a military man, a policeman and a civil defense man did nothing to intimidate the driver who kept saying ”It is sad that I have to be at a filling station today.
“My family is at home waiting for me to come and take them out. This is unfair, sad and cruel. This is my worst Christmas’’.
At Jabi, NAN reports that the security men were dressed to the hilt with helmets as if ready for chaos but there were still very long illegal lines blocking the exit to NIPCO.
A motorist, Mr Salau Agidingbi, told NAN, “it is these illegal queues that cause chaos during crisis such as these. they block flow of oncoming traffic, block the exit for drivers that have got fuel after queuing up for hours and want to be served immediately they get into the station”.
At Texaco, a pump attendant, who did not wish to be named, told NAN “we close at seven before because of security issues but because of the people traveling we have to extend our time till 9 p.m. or 10 p.m.
Another motorist, Celia Tamuno told NAN “this Christmas is horrible. See me here. It is annoying and the lines are so long. Other mothers are at Wonderland, other fun places and I’m here. This is heart-breaking’’.

NEWS: FG says no plan to hike fuel price

The Vice-President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, on Monday restated that the Federal Government had no plan to increase the pump price of petrol in 2018.

Osinbajo gave the assurance during his visit to fuel depots in Lagos where he monitored the loading of trucks to ensure steady supply of petrol to designated filling stations.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Osinbajo visited some major fuel depot terminals and stakeholders in Apapa and other parts of Lagos on Christmas Day.
According to the Vice President, the fuel scarcity facing the country is as a result of shortage of supply to depots across the country.
“The President is very much concerned about Nigerians and how we can quickly end the fuel scarcity crisis in the country.
“The fuel crisis presently confronting the country is as a result of shortage of supply of fuel to depots across the country.
“We hope that in the next couple of days, we would be able to end the fuel queues,” Osinbajo said.
He said that any marketer who hoarded petroleum products for the purpose of making extra profit would be dealt with by the enforcement agency saddled with the responsibility of regulating the sector.
Earlier at the stakeholders interaction meeting, the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Dr Ibe Kachikwu, said that the long queues would be over by Wednesday.
Kachikwu, who noted that over 150 trucks were supplying fuel daily, added that there had been series of meetings and consultations with the oil marketers.
He said that he would meet with the Group Managing Director of NNPC, Dr Maikanti Baru, to put together structures and additional plans to end the fuel shortage currently facing the country.
NAN recalls that the Vice-President had on Christmas Eve made an unexpected stopover at some filling stations in Lekki and other parts of Lagos Island to assess the fuel situation.
According to the Vice President, the Buhari administration is doing everything possible to quickly resolve the fuel shortage experienced by Nigerians.
It would be recalled that President Muhammadu Buhari had on Sunday sympathized with Nigerians over their suffering occasioned by the scarcity of petrol across the country.
President Buhari said that he had already directed the regulators to step up their surveillance and bring an end to hoarding of the products and price inflation by marketers.
Fuel scarcity during festive periods is a recurring feature in Nigeria, although it disappeared in the last two years.
In some states a litre of fuel rose to between N200 and N300 per litre as against the official pump price of N145.

NEWS: Beyonce is the world’s highest paid female singer

Beyonce’s hit album “Lemonade” and world tour made her the highest-paid woman in music in 2017, according to an annual Forbes list on Monday.

The Pop Diva edged out Britain’s Adele and pop star Taylor Swift. The R&B singer earned some 105 million dollars from record sales and from her “Formation” concert tour, according to Forbes.

She also has her own Ivy Park fashion line and other business interests.

Adele, whose “25” album broke first-week U.S. sales records in 2015 and who completed her first major tour since 2011, made second place with an estimated 69 million dollars, despite having no major endorsements for other products.

Swift, who topped the last year’s list with 170 million dollars in estimated earnings, raked in 44 million dollars this time despite having finished her “1989” world tour.

The singer is expected to see her earnings rise significantly in the next 12 months courtesy of her new album “Reputation” – the best-selling album of 2017 – and an upcoming tour.

Canadian superstar Celine Dion took the No.4 spot, earning some 42 million dollars after taking a break from her Las Vegas residency following the death of her husband Rene Angelil in January 2016.

Forbes compiled the list after estimating pretax income for the 12 months from June 2016 to 2017, based on interviews with managers, agents, lawyers and some of the stars.
It also looked at data from the Pollstar, the Recording Industry Association of America and tracking firm Nielsen SoundScan.

NEWS: Count us out of Kano APC crisis—Presidency

Following the removal of Alhaji Umar Doguwa, as Chairman of Kano chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC), the Presidency has warned against dragging the name of President Muhammadu Buhari into the ongoing politics.

Malam Garba Shehu, a presidential spokesman, gave the warning in a statement issued in Abuja on Sunday.

Shehu described as false, the accusation that Buhari was behind the removal of the erstwhile APC chairman in Kano State.
The presidential aide was reacting to the allegations made at a press conference in Kano by a political support group “Concerned Members of the APC in Kano State”.
He stated that at no time did the president involve himself in the internal conflict of any APC chapter in the country, and would never do so.
“President Buhari would not risk his integrity to support one side against the other in the affairs the APC or any other political party anywhere in the country.
“Anybody who knows the president’s principles would not believe any allegation linking him (Buhari) to interference in the election or removal of party leaders across the country”.
He noted that Buhari was accused in the past of not taking control of the National Assembly by imposing some people on the legislature as Senate President and Speaker of the House of Representatives.
Shehu said that it was ironical that the president would now be accused of abandoning those principles to order the removal of the chairman.
“I am 100 per cent convinced that this group, which is being associated with the respected senator representing Kano, Rabiu Kwankwaso, did not seek his permission before dragging President Buhari’s name into this matter.
“Kwankwaso knows President Buhari too well to reduce him to this level,” he said.
The presidential aide therefore advised the group to stop belittling the person and office of the president by dragging his name into their local party quarrels.
He added that it was unfair to attack the president over an issue he knew nothing about.
